This module looks at the requirements, preparation, procedure, aftercare and outcomes of tail amputation, including:
Requirements – personnel, materials.
Preparation – pre-medication, dietary preparation, site preparation and other.
Procedure – skin incisions, muscles and nerve transection, transect vertebral column, suture muscle, suture skin. Procedure for species capable of autotomy and regeneration.
Aftercare – monitoring, fluid requirements, general care, analgesia, antimicrobial therapy, wound protection, special precautions, follow up.
Outcomes – possible complications and reasons for treatment failure. Prognosis is generally good.
