This module looks at pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and outcomes of idiopathic cystitis in cats, including:
Cause – most frequently seen in cats that are overweight, have limited exercise, and eat a dry diet. Genetics is also believed to play a role.
Signs – pollakiuria, dysuria, stranguria, agitation when trying to urinate, periuria.
Diagnosis - client history, clinical signs and diagnostic investigation.
Treatment – unblock obstruction, analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs, dilute urine, reduce stress, treatment of urethral spasm, GAG/GAGA precursor supplements, tricyclic antidepressants.
Prognosis – variable.
