This module looks at pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and outcomes of rabies in horses, including:
Cause – an infection caused by rabies virus, which manifests as neurological disease. Transmitted by bite of or saliva contact (with broken skin or intact mucous membrane) from a rabid animal.
Signs – neurological signs with ‘paralytic’, ‘dumb’ and ‘furious’ forms.
Diagnosis – history, signs. Post-mortem examination.
Treatment – none.
Prognosis – invariably fatal, inactivated vaccine available.
