This module looks at pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and outcomes of acariasis in guinea pigs, including:
Cause – Trixacarus caviae, Chirodiscoides caviae.
Signs – alopecia, crusting, pruritus.
Diagnosis – skin scraping but may miss Trixacarus; Chirodiscoides usually detected readily. Deep scraping or biopsy sometimes needed for Trixacarus.
Treatment – ivermectin, selamectin, pyrethroid flea powder dusts.
Prognosis – good if treated.
