This module looks at pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and outcomes of alopecia in guinea pigs, including:
Cause – any disease process that affects hair follicles can lead to hair loss, eg pruritus, deep pyoderma, ectoparasites, dermatophytosis, allergens, neoplasia, endocrine disease, poor overall health.
Signs – hair loss, pruritus.
Diagnosis – visual examination, microscopy, skin scrape/biopsy, adhesive tape test, bacterial culture and sensitivity, fungal culture.
Treatment – depends on diagnosis.
Prognosis – good for most cases of acquired alopecia.
