This module looks at general concepts, basic monitoring, and monitoring the sick neonate, including:
General concepts – normal care, intermediate care, intensive care, low dependency, high dependency, and critical care management.
Basic monitoring – behaviour/mental state, heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, umbilical cord, defecation, urination, neurological/muscle tone, bodyweight, on-going medication/fluid therapy.
Monitoring the sick neonate – initial assessment, repeat clinical examination and neurological scoring, blood pressure measurements, urine output and urine specific gravity, monitoring associated with nutrition, ultrasonography, radiography, and sepsis scoring.
