Develop your knowledge and understanding of dental malocclusion and overgrowth teeth in rabbits. This is a one-part course that can also be taken as part of the Dental management & surgery course bundle.

This module looks at cause, diagnosis, treatment, control and prognosis of dental malocclusion and overgrowth in rabbits, including:
Cause – mainly nutritional osteodystrophy and/or lack of attrition involving all the teeth; less commonly congenital malocclusion, especially in dwarf breeds, traumatic fracture of maxilla, mandible, teeth from being dropped.
Signs – minimal until disease is severe, overgrown incisors damaging soft tissues of mouth, horizontal ribbing on upper incisors, palpable swelling along ventral border of mandible, dacryocystitis, hypersalivation, dysphagia, anorexia, polydipsia, weight loss, fly strike, caked feces around anus, abscesses.
Treatment – difficult once clinical signs have developed, rectify diet, trim overgrown molars, premolars and incisors with dental burr, calcium and vitamin D supplement with care, teeth extractions, dissect out abscesses, antibiotics, euthanasia.
Prevention - diet.
