This module looks at the requirements, preparation, procedure, aftercare and outcomes of digit and limb amputation, including:
Requirements – personnel, materials.
Preparation – pre-medication, dietary preparation, site preparation and other.
Procedure – skin incisions, muscles and nerve transection, ligate major blood vessels, cut bone or incise joint capsule, suture muscles, suture skin, attach prosthesis in tortoises if needed.
Aftercare – monitoring, fluid requirements, general care, analgesia, antimicrobial therapy, wound protection, special precautions, follow up.
Outcomes – possible complications, reasons for treatment failure, prognosis generally good.
