This module looks at lactate and cellular physiology, practical aspects of lactate measurement, causes of hyperlactatemia, and prognostic value of plasma lactate in dogs, including:
Lactate and cellular physiology – three distinct mechanisms.
Practical aspects of lactate measurement – arterial samples, muscular activity, restraint and occlusion, peripheral venous lactate, bench top analyzers.
Causes of hyperlactatemia – usually occurs secondary to inadequate oxygen delivery relative to oxygen demand.
Prognostic value of plasma lactate – shock, septic peritonitis, soft tissue infection, babesiosis, immune-mediate haemolytic anemia, gastric dilation-volvulus.
Therapy of hyperlactemia – restoration of adequate tissue perfusion, maintenance of circulating haemoglobin, assessment of lactate in other fluids.
