Develop your knowledge and understanding of periodontal disease in rabbits. This is a one-part course that can also be taken as part of the Dental management & surgery course bundle.
This module looks at pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and outcomes of periodontal disease in rabbits, including:
Pathogenesis – diets high in refined/simple carbohydrates encourage the proliferation and accumulation of bacteria. Abnormal tooth growth, orientation, and occlusion can allow food debris into the interdental and periodontal spaces.
Signs – unpleasant smell around the mouth, pain on eating or reluctance to eat, drooling or constant lip licking.
Diagnosis – thorough oral examination under anesthetic.
Treatment – dietary modification, oral examination and cleaning/flushing of periodontal pockets, antibiosis.
Prognosis – good with appropriate treatment and dietary modification.
