Develop your knowledge and understanding of sarcoids in horses. This is a one-part course that can also be taken as part of the common skin tumors course bundle. 

This module looks at pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and outcomes of sarcoids in horses, including:
Cause – unknown although there is strong evidence for the involvement of bovine papilloma virus types 1 and 2.
Signs – clinical signs vary from faint circular areas of alopecia and hair coat color and density changes to small or larger nodules, to large ulcerated fibromatous and invasive tumors.
Diagnosis – confirmation by biopsy may be justifiable in difficult locations and where there is a doubt on diagnosis.
Treatment – therapeutic options are severely limited. Different treatments have different success rates for the various forms of the disease.
Prognosis – Guarded. Most individual lesions become larger, more extensive and more aggressive if left alone. A few lesions remain static and few horses remain with low numbers.
