Develop your knowledge and understanding of septic shock in dogs. This is a one-part course that can also be taken as part of the Canine shock course bundle.

This module looks at pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and outcomes of septic shock in dogs, including:
Cause – dysregulated inflammatory response to an infection (bacterial, viral, protozoal or fungal).
Signs – depend on location of the infection, virulence of the organism, co-morbidities of the host as well as age and immunocompetence. SIRS criteria typically consists of tachycardia, tachypnea, hyper/hypothermia.
Treatment – treatment of the infection source, treatment of secondary organ failure/coagulopathy, appropriate and timely antimicrobial administration, intravenous fluid therapy and vasopressors when required.
Prognosis – guarded, worsening as the patient progresses from mild SIRS to progressive systemic inflammation to organ dysfunction and vascular collapse. Associated with high mortality rates.
